Habits of Cockatiels
1. In the natural environment, cockatiels mainly inhabit grasslands, woods and farmland, and like small group activities. The daily food is mainly plant fruit seeds and buds.
2. Cockatiels are robust, resistant to roughage, strong disease resistance, easy to feed, and have good reproductive performance. Under normal feeding conditions, they rarely die. However, it should be noted that in the process of raising it, it should be noted that it cannot be fasted or watered, and the feed fed to it should not be too single.
3. Cockatiels can be raised on parrot racks as ornamental or domesticated birds. However, this kind of parrot is good at climbing and likes to chew on wood, so it is best to use a metal cage to raise the cockatiel, and the perch can use hardwood or hard branches with a diameter of about 2cm. In addition, the parrot’s water utensils should be strong and secure to prevent the parrot from biting or knocking over the water utensils.
4. The breeding season of Cockatiels is from August to December, and they mainly build their nests in tree holes or caves. Cockatiels lay 4 to 7 eggs per litter, and the eggs are white. The female cockatiel undertakes the main hatching task. The incubation period is about 18 to 20 days, and the male and female parent birds share the brood. It is recommended to use a closed nest box made of five plywood to raise parrots, and it is best to add a partition in the middle of the nest box, and open an access hole on the front, and lay sawdust inside. The water tank of the parrot should be cleaned once a day or every other day and replaced with clean drinking water in time. Parrot food cans, water cans and utensils should be disinfected once a month. The temperature changes greatly in spring and autumn, and the main focus of feeding is to adjust the room temperature in time to prevent the parrot from getting sick. In winter, pay attention to keeping warm measures for parrots to ensure that the indoor temperature is not lower than 16 ℃. When the temperature in summer is above 30 ℃, attention should be paid to strengthening ventilation.
5. The feed for cockatiels is mainly millet, millet, rice, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, tares, vegetables, etc. . Cockatiels can breed all year round, but in the hot climate of July to August, parrot breeding should be stopped, and its nests should be removed in time. If the nest is not removed in time, the parrot will continue to breed, although the eggs hatched by the parrot will still develop well in the hot weather, but the hatching rate is very low. And there will be a considerable part of the chicks suffocated in the eggshell, resulting in a delay in the parrot’s moulting period.
6. Cockatiels can breed 3 to 4 litters a year. First-born parrots can lay 3 to 4 eggs per nest, and then generally lay 4 to 6 eggs. The parrot lays an egg every other day, and after laying the third egg, the mother bird begins to incubate. The chicks are generally housed in separate cages after they are ready to eat, as the mother will start laying eggs again. During the breeding and hatching of parrots, attention should be paid to maintaining a quiet environment, try to avoid external interference of parrots, and try not to flip the nest and move the bird cage, so as not to cause the parent birds to abandon the nest and affect the hatching and brooding of eggs. If the parrot breeds in winter, be sure to keep the room temperature above 20°C, the relative humidity at 45% to 50%, and keep indoor air circulation.
7. The average life expectancy of a cockatiel is about 18 years old, and some can last for more than 20 years. However, with the increase of age, the reproduction rate of the cockatiel will continue to decrease, so when the cockatiel reaches a certain age, it should stop breeding, otherwise not only the egg production rate is not high, but also the health of the parent birds will be adversely affected .
