What’s up with the sunken eyes of turtles?

Causes of sunken eyes in turtles

I. Malnutrition

1. The tortoise was malnourished because of the disease and I received other infections. Turtles tend to lose their appetite and eat less when they are sick, leading to malnutrition. Or the tortoise is infected by a large number of parasites, which causes the nutrients it eats to be sucked up by the parasites, so that the tortoise’s body cannot get enough nutrients. Since the eyes are sunken due to malnutrition.

2. The tortoise’s malnutrition may also be due to insufficient nutrients in the food it eats on a daily basis. Even if it eats normally, it still cannot absorb sufficient nutrients. Finally, due to long-term malnutrition, the symptoms of sunken eyes appear.

For the above two situations, it is necessary to cure the underlying disease and supplement the tortoise with adequate nutrition in time. When the disease and nutritional problems are resolved, the tortoise’s eyes will naturally recover. Pet owners can use the following ways to supplement nutrition to the turtle: feed the turtle more fish and shrimp food. These foods are rich in nutrients, and turtles also prefer to eat them. Don’t supplement it by feeding it raw livestock meat, which can carry parasites that can make sick turtles sicker. In addition, shellfish food has more parasites, and pet owners should also pay attention to avoid feeding these foods. In addition, you can also mix some vitamins in the tortoise’s food to feed it. For example, you can mix small Shierkang tablets into the turtle’s food, feeding half a tablet at a time or feeding a tablet every two days.

Second, dehydration caused

Dehydration is also a common cause of sunken eyes in turtles One of the reasons is that if the symptoms of dehydration are mild, it is generally relieved by putting the turtle into the water. If the symptoms of dehydration do not improve and the tortoise has a poor appetite, the mayor can try feeding him some probiotics. If the effect is not good, it is recommended to take it to the veterinary hospital for diagnosis and treatment.

If the turtle’s dehydration is caused by bacterial infection, you need to add some antibacterial drugs to the turtle’s drinking water for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment, and you can also give it an appropriate amount of vitamins. At the same time, let it be exposed to the sun to increase its resistance. In this case, when the infection problem of the sick turtle is resolved, the sick turtle can recover.

In addition, tortoises often experience dehydration symptoms during hibernation. Take it out and soak it in warm water for about ten minutes, the symptoms of dehydration can be eliminated. If the turtle’s dehydration symptoms are serious, you can also try adding an appropriate amount of glucose solution to the water to better relieve the turtle’s dehydration symptoms.

Warm reminder: Many times turtles need to be dry-raised to assist in treatment when they are sick. The way to raise turtles, don’t forget to soak the turtles in water during dry raising, otherwise the drying time is too long  it is easy to dehydrate the turtles, and if you don’t add water to it in time, it will also lead to its death. For this reason, pet owners need to pay attention to this.
