How to Adopt a Healthy Kitten

Where do healthy kittens come from?

The experiences of healthy kittens are all similar:

1) have healthy parents (no apparent genetic defect)

2) reproduce normally (No random breeding, no over-breeding)

3) Female cats are well cared for during pregnancy (sufficient nutrition, clean and comfortable environment)

4) Nursing female cats and kittens are well cared for (sufficient nutrition, clean and comfortable environment)

5) kittens do not leave the mother too early

The most important principle: parents who have seen kittens before considering adoption

It is strongly recommended that parents who have seen kittens before adopting cats (whether free or paid) , this is the most important principle of cat adoption.

After you have met the cat’s parents, you can determine:

1) Whether the cat’s parents are healthy, whether they are usually fed good food, and whether the living environment is clean and comfortable

2) Whether the cat parents and cat mothers are suitable for breeding, indiscriminate breeding can easily lead to congenital diseases. For example, if folded ears cannot be matched with folded ears, the probability of congenital diseases is very high in the matched cat; for example, dwarf cats cannot be matched with puppets, and the paired puppets have problems walking.

Usually in many cat stores, you can only see the kittens in the window, and there is a high probability that you will not see the kitten’s parents. When you ask a parent who wants to see a kitten, the owner usually prevaricates you like this: We have our own cattery, and ours is in the suburbs. When this happens, the source of the kitten is probably unknown. For the sake of safety, adoption is not recommended.

A good cathouse, usually you can see the cat’s parents directly when you go to see the kitten. At this time, you should observe the female cat as closely as possible, ask as many questions as possible to the owner, and learn as much as possible about how the owner cares for the cat. If the mother cat appears to be thin, the quality of the milk the kittens are getting is not guaranteed.

Minor Principle: Don’t Bring Home Before 12 Weeks

Weeks 3 to 7 are the most important social time period after a cat is born. Kittens learn social skills through play with their parents, siblings, and prepare for adulthood.

If kittens are picked up prematurely from their parents, they will have a relatively more difficult time integrating with other cats in the family as they grow up, or being less close to people, and may be uncoordinated in movement.

At the same time, the sooner the cat leaves the mother after birth, the shorter the time for the kittens to be breastfed, It means that its physique may be worse than other kittens in the future.

Regular cathouses and backyard cats

There will be “regular cathouses” and “backyard cathouses” in the market. It is generally believed that regular cat house

breeding is more standardized, while backyard cat house breeding is relatively chaotic.

Regular cattery and backyard cattery, I don’t think there is a black and white relationship. Some regular cat houses are not completely in line with the characteristics of regular cat houses, and some backyard cat houses also have some characteristics of regular cat houses. So everyone should consider the specific situation.

Don’t worry about adopting a kitten. A kitten will accompany you for many years.
