Parasitic skin disease in dogs

Symptoms of ectoparasites

Mites are the most common and common cause of skin disease in dogs. The most difficult parasite to treat. Demodicosis is hereditary, and can be induced when the body’s immune function is reduced due to relapse of the disease after reproduction or estrus or mating due to changes in hormone secretion levels. There was no obvious itching, skin exudation, crusting, and wrinkle formation.

It occurs mainly on the head, around the eyelids and at the ends of the extremities. Scabies mites are characterized by severe itching and eczematous dermatitis, mainly on the face, auricle, and ventral side of the Chihuahua. Ear mites are characterized by itchy ears and brown discharge from the pinna.

First, dogs are susceptible to three main types of mites. They are scabies mites (which have a higher incidence), Demodex mites (more stubborn and tend to infect long-haired dogs), and ear mites. Their symptoms are different:

1. Scabies mites

Usually puppies are more common and more severe, first appearing on the bridge of the nose, cheeks, ears and underarms, and then gradually spread to whole body. The skin is just a little red at first, then small red boils, then blisters, and when the blisters burst, the yellow oily exudate that oozes dries out, forming a scaly crusted skin. The affected area can be intensely itchy, and dogs often cannot resist scratching the affected area, or rubbing against the ground or various objects in an attempt to relieve the itch, resulting in severe hair loss.

2. Demodex mites

There are two types of Demodex mites: scaly and pustular:

①Scaly

Characterized by well-defined eyelids and under-eyes, forehead, lips, neck, elbows, and between toes and depilation, bald spots, and surrounding hair, with mild skin flushing and bran-like scaling , the skin becomes rough, cracked, and some dogs have small boils. The skin is pale but not itchy.

②pustular type

Most of them were small red papules on the medial femur and lower abdomen, which turned into small abscesses within a few days. In severe cases, the dog will develop a large area of red and white bumps on the inner side of the femur, and it will also emit a special odor, and it will be accompanied by itching. At this point, the dog will show extreme discomfort. If a large number of Demodex mites are parasitized, it will cause systemic skin infection, hair loss, pustules rupture and develop into ulcers. Continued development may cause bacterial infection and even death.

3. Ear mites

parasitic on the outer ear of dogs and are highly contagious. They will produce a large amount of lipid secretion and lymphatic leakage. In the advanced stage, secondary ulceration and itching feel To a certain extent, dogs occasionally scratch their ears with their paws, or keep shaking their heads, scratch their ears, and bark. There is brown-black secretion in the ear canal, and the epidermis is hyperplasia. Dogs experience significant pressure and pain in their ears and refuse to have their ears examined. Sometimes, the dog will rotate to the side with the more severe disease. Once secondary bacterial infection occurs, it may lead to the onset of suppurative otitis media and otitis media. More severe cases can lead to encephalitis, which affects the nerves of the brain.
