parrot breeding process

Various stages of parrot reproduction

1. Common breeding

If the owner has the plan to breed parrots, it is best to buy a male and a female parrot for breeding at first, because it is not suitable for breeding alone, so if you have the idea of breeding parrots, choose a male parrot and a female parrot respectively. A female parrot is the best choice. In addition, when purchasing parrots, owners need to pay attention to negotiation and discussion with the store in order to select parrots with better personality and health. When the parrots are in their breeding season, they can be kept in the same cage for feeding, and the cages can be moved to a darker place to give them a better environment.

2. Estrus, mating

In order to promote parrot estrus, you can provide them with some high-calorie, high-protein feed. If the male parrot continuously rubs his butt, taps the perch with his beak, or croaks, it indicates that he is in heat, which is an obvious courtship behavior of male parrots. Shortly in heat, the male parrot’s shoulder feathers will gradually expand, and the female parrot will respond by raising the tail feathers, and then the male parrot will step on the female parrot’s back to mate. After the fertilization is successful and the eggs in the female parrot’s abdomen mature, the female parrot will enter the nest box directly to prepare for laying eggs.

3. Laying eggs

After a week of mating between the female and the male, the female will stay in the nesting box quietly, and slowly its belly will continue to grow and change. hard. After a short time, the female will excrete heavy-smelling, large feces, and these symptoms indicate that the female is about to lay eggs. In general, parrots usually lay 5 to 6 eggs per nest. When the bird lays eggs, the owner needs to pay special attention to its nutritional balance, feed it some high-calorie, high-protein nourishing pills, and appropriately increase calcium-rich food and fresh vegetables.

4. Hold eggs

When the female bird starts to hold the egg, the male bird will take the initiative to take the feed into it. The nest box where the female bird is located allows the female bird to feed, and at this stage, the male bird will stand in front of the nest box and maintain a high level of alertness in order to protect the female bird. After the birds appear to hold the eggs, the owner can switch to the original feeding method.

5. Incubation

After 17 to 23 days after the female bird holds the eggs, each egg will hatch one by one in the order of laying eggs, but there may be some eggs that will not hatch. After the eggs hatch, the female will chew the feed and then spit it out to feed the chicks. At this time, the main job of the breeder is to maintain the temperature in the breeding box at 26-30°C and the humidity at 60-70%. At the same time, pay attention to keeping the breeding box clean and hygienic, and provide the birds with sufficient nutritionally balanced feed. The female will take care of the chicks, and the owner does not have to keep an eye on the breeding box to prevent the female from abandoning the nest.

6. Brooding

The chicks have no hair or only a small amount of hair when they hatch, and their eyes are closed. The chicks’ eyes don’t open until about a week later, and feathers begin to grow after two weeks. After the third week, the chick’s plumage begins to become brightly colored.
