parrot trichomonas disease

I. Symptoms of parrot trichomoniasis

1. The throat of the parrot infected with Trichomonas will have yellow cheese-like lesions gathering. Because of this, the sick parrot will stop eating and slowly lead to weight loss.

2. At the same time, the affected bird will not be able to close its mouth because of the damage to the oral cavity, so the affected bird will usually drool and swallow repeatedly. The symptom is similar to that of the affected bird’s throat. When trichomoniasis also affects the parrot’s sinus area or the tissues around the eyes, it can also cause watery eyes in affected birds.

4. In addition, the affected bird often has symptoms such as diarrhea, increased water intake, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, the affected bird may suffocate and die because the foreign body produced by the disease blocks its trachea.

5. When the disease develops to a certain level, the affected bird will become very thin, unwilling to fly or unable to fly, and its crop may be covered with yellow cheese matter, and even yellow matter may be extends to its front stomach.

6. The most serious is the damage caused by the disease to the internal organs of parrots.

2. Diagnosis and treatment of parrot trichomoniasis

Diagnosis of psittacosis:

The clinical symptoms and lesion location of psittacosis are the main basis for the diagnosis of the disease, but attention should be paid to distinguish between trichomoniasis psittacosis and Candida psittaci infection , because the symptoms of the two are similar. Therefore, in order to accurately diagnose the disease, it is necessary to collect the lesion location of the affected bird for microscopic analysis. Generally, it is not recommended to collect the feces of the affected bird. It should be collected directly in the oral cavity of the affected bird. Testing also generally does not detect this species of Trichomonas.

Treatment of parrot trichomoniasis:

1. First of all, if a parrot is found to be infected with trichomoniasis, the infected bird should be immediately isolated and raised separately.

2. Afterwards, pay attention to thoroughly clean and disinfect the original breeding environment of the affected bird, preferably the entire house.

3. For infected birds, they can be treated with antiprotozoal drugs, such as dimethylnidazole. The dosage of the drug is: 50ml/kg body weight, or a small amount of the drug can be diluted with water into 0.05% dimetronidazole and fed to the bird, and the drug is continuously treated for 5 to 6 days. Owners can usually prevent Trichomonas infection by feeding parrots a small amount of apple cider vinegar.

Reminder: Parrot trichomoniasis should be mainly prevented. When introducing new birds, do not immediately let the new birds live in groups with the original healthy parrots. First, keep the new birds in isolation and observe them. for a period of time so that the new bird hides the disease and transmits it to other healthy parrots.
