Symptoms of canine ascariasis Physiological characteristics and control measures of dog roundworms

Canine ascariasis

This disease is caused by canine ascariasis and lion ascariasis in the small intestine and stomach of humans. It is widely distributed in my country and mainly harms puppies aged 1 to 3 months, affecting growth and development, and can cause death in severe infection.

Ascaris canis pathogen and its life history

Ascaris canis (Toxocara canis) is light yellow and white, with 3 lips at the head end and long and narrow lips on the side of the body Nervical membrane. Ascaris canis is characterized by a small stomach where the esophagus meets the bowel. Males are 50-110 mm long with curved tails; females are 90-180 mm long with straight tails. Lion roundworms (Toxocara lion) are similar in color and shape to human roundworms, but without a small stomach; males are 35-70 mm long, and females are 30-100 mm long.
Ascaris canis eggs are excreted with feces and develop into infectious eggs under suitable conditions. After the puppies under 3 months of age swallowed the infectious eggs, larvae hatched in the intestines. The larvae penetrated the intestinal wall of the dog, passed through the lymphatic system to the mesenteric lymph nodes, and then reached the liver through the blood flow, and then reached the lungs with the blood flow. The alveoli, bronchioles, and bronchus are swallowed into the stomach through the throat, and then develop into adults in the small intestine. The whole process takes 4 to 5 weeks. After older dogs swallow the infectious eggs, the larvae will reach various tissues and organs of the body along with the blood flow, forming cysts, and the larvae will remain alive, but will not develop further; after the female dog with cysts in the body is pregnant, the larvae will be activated, Migrate through the placenta to the fetal liver causing intrafetal infection. After the fetus is born, the larvae migrate to the lungs, and then migrate to the gastrointestinal tract to develop into adults. Mature Ascaris canis appears 23-40 days after the puppies are born. Newborn puppies can also cause infection by sucking colostrum; after infection, the larvae develop directly into adults in the small intestine.
Ascaris larvae eggs develop into infectious eggs under suitable external conditions. After being swallowed by dogs, the larvae escape in the small intestine, and then penetrate into the intestinal wall to develop and return to the intestinal cavity. After 3- 4 weeks to develop into adults.

Symptoms of Ascaris canis

(1) Clinical symptoms: gradual weight loss, pale mucous membrane. Loss of appetite, vomiting, pica, dyspepsia, diarrhea first and then constipation. Occasional epileptic seizures. The puppies have a distended abdomen and are stunted in development. When the infection is severe, roundworms are often excreted in the vomit and feces, which can be confirmed.
(2) Laboratory examination: Saline flotation or direct smear method can be used to check the eggs in the feces for diagnosis.

Prevention and control measures of canine roundworm

(1) Regular inspection and deworming: once a month for puppies and once a season for adult dogs, if any sick dog is found, deworm immediately . Available levamisole, 10 mg per kg body weight orally. Or use mebendazole, 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, twice a day for two days. Or use pyrantel (antichongling) 5-10 mg per kg body weight, orally. Or use 100 mg per kilogram of body weight ascarcinol, orally.
(2) Do a good job of cleaning and sanitation: the environment, troughs, and food should be cleaned and sanitated carefully, and the feces should be removed in time and fermented.
