What are the common eye diseases of parrots and how should they be treated?

Common eye diseases in parrots

One, parrot keratitis

1. Etiology: The common cause of parrots suffering from keratitis is that the birds fight and peck each other, or the cornea is accidentally scratched or scratched by the sharp objects or appliances in the cage, etc. , resulting in keratitis; or due to infectious disease infection.

2. Symptoms: Corneal damage in parrots can be divided into three levels: surface layer, deep layer, and penetration. The damage to the surface of the cornea is relatively minor, and scars are generally not left after the wound heals, and the bird’s vision can generally return to normal after timely treatment; The bird’s vision is permanently affected; penetrating corneal damage is more severe and can be life-threatening for the sick bird.

Injury to the surface of the cornea in birds generally only shows symptoms such as tearing and photophobia. If it is a deep injury, it will be accompanied by symptoms such as eye congestion, tearing, closed eyes for a long time, photophobia and other symptoms. When the condition worsens, it will also cause the eye membrane to become cloudy and purulent. If it is a penetrating injury, fluid will flow out of the eyes of the sick bird, and the iris will fall off. In severe cases, it will evolve into purulent keratitis.

3. Treatment: Move the sick bird to a dimly lit place as soon as possible to avoid light irritating its eyes. Then carefully observe the cornea of the sick bird to check for foreign bodies. If a foreign body is present, remove it carefully. After removing the foreign body, rinse the eyes of the sick bird repeatedly with normal saline or warm water, and then drop antibiotic eye drops

into the eyes. In the early stage of treatment, escerin or atropine can be used alternately with antibiotics for treatment, and 3 to 5 drops are given to sick birds every day. In the later stage, chloramphenicol eye drops can be used for treatment, which is more likely to be cured.

2. Parrot conjunctivitis

1. Cause: parrot conjunctivitis The etiology of parrot is more complicated. It may be caused by trauma to the parrot’s eyes, lack of vitamins in the body, or infection by bacteria, viruses or parasites.

2. Symptoms: Conjunctival congestion of sick birds, moist eye sockets, frequent tears, swollen eyelids, significant increase in eye secretions, etc. In severe cases, the upper and lower eyelids of the sick bird will stick together, As a result, the sick bird’s eyes cannot be opened.

Treatment method: transfer the sick bird to a darker place, rinse the eyes of the sick bird with sterile saline, and then drop chloramphenicol or chloramphenicol into the eyes of the sick bird The medicine is used 3 to 6 times a day. During the treatment period, the birds are fed some vitamin A and vitamin B2, and the symptoms of the sick birds can be significantly improved soon after.

III. Parrot cataract

1. Comparison of etiology and etiology of the disease Complicated, mainly due to inflammation of the bird’s uveal layer. In addition, parrots are born with underdeveloped eyes or carry genetic diseases, lack of vitamin E in the body, or eye injuries, etc., which may also lead to cataracts in parrots.

2. Symptoms: The eyes of sick birds will become cloudy, accompanied by symptoms such as corneal edema, eye bleeding and pus, blurred vision, frequent blinking, and increased eye fluid.

Treatment: Cataracts in the lining of the parrot’s eye can only be treated by surgery. And the early treatment, the higher the chance of cure.

Warm reminder: parrot eye diseases should be prevented rather than cured. Check the birds on a regular basis, so as to detect the abnormality of the birds in time and solve them in time.
