How long should a rabbit’s teeth be?
Although the length of a rabbit’s teeth is related to its breed, the teeth of small rabbits will also be shorter. But all must be maintained within a certain length.
Incisors: The rabbit’s upper and lower incisors should be long, straight, white, and overlap slightly, and the rabbit’s mouth must be closed.
Spike teeth: The owner should not see spiked teeth. Because nail teeth are generally hidden behind the upper incisors, if these teeth are seen by the owner, it proves that the nail teeth are too long.
Molars: The molars are similar to the incisors, but the ends of the molars are more blunt and don’t stop the rabbit from closing its mouth.
How to tell if a rabbit’s teeth are too long?
We can observe whether the rabbit has the following three phenomena, if so, it proves that its teeth are too long.
1. Sharpness of teeth: Although the teeth of rabbits may be a bit long, they are generally blunt. If it becomes like a fang, it needs to be trimmed.
2. Discoloration: Normally, rabbit teeth should be pure white, but if their teeth start to turn yellow and the mouth cannot be closed, it is caused by too long teeth.
3. Nasal or eye secretions: Because rabbits have ingrown teeth, if they are too long, they may irritate the nose or eyes, resulting in a runny nose or excessive tears.
So feeders regularly check the rabbit’s teeth for signs of misalignment, discoloration or overgrowth, and then trim them in time.
What if my rabbit’s teeth are too long?
1. If the rabbit’s teeth are too long, it is recommended that the owner take it directly to the pet hospital for a professional veterinarian to remove the excessively long teeth of the rabbit.
2. Give rabbits some Timothy grass. Timothy grass not only has a good effect on the absorption of nutrients in the rabbit’s body, but also is a good tool for rabbits to grind their teeth.
3. In the process of feeding rabbits, you can let the rabbits chew more molar sticks, which can also prevent the teeth from growing too long.
