Why do dogs bite?
Pups often practice how to control their bite by playing with each other before they are truly independent from the bitch. That’s what we see wrestling, chasing, and biting each other’s mouths between puppies. This is a very interesting game for them, especially those puppies with sharp baby teeth. It is through interaction with each other that they know how much bite force their buddies can withstand.
So, when they leave their companions and live with humans, they are likely to bite our hands, faces, hair, etc. with their mouths. We often ran away screaming and the dogs chased after us. In our opinion, it’s an escape, but for puppies, it adds to the fun. Gradually, this “bad habit” developed. For example, sometimes, when the little friends are playing with the puppy, they scream while running. The sharp voice of the child just encourages the puppy to continue chasing them. The louder the screaming, the more excited the dog is.
If the puppies bite the bitch or other puppies, the bitch will pick up the puppies’ fate and give them a “crackling education”. Usually, this is when the puppy will know it’s wrong. However, if the puppy arrives in a new home without a complete education, there will be a situation in which the puppy will bite hard during play and cannot control the intensity.
Training dogs to control bite force
For this nature of puppies, we can do the following method for training.
Training tools: interactive toys, clickers, snacks
Training place: as long as it is enough to play with the puppies on weekdays, the owner should focus on the dog during this period The moment when the teeth bite the owner’s hand or clothing, and then give some correct responses to this critical time point.
Training method: Use interactive toys to attract the dog’s attention, but pay attention to that the toy must be movable to satisfy the nature of dog hunters. During the interaction, once the dog bites your hand, Immediately hit the clicker and stop the game, give verbal praise and a snack reward. If the dog’s behavior is not under control, get up and leave, end all play, and let the dog understand that when it bites beyond a certain limit, it will bring a “bad thing”, the owner’s departure.
Finally, owners must be patient when training dogs, step-by-step, and positive training, so that furry children can feel the joy of learning!
