What are the symptoms of a blocked nasolacrimal duct in dogs?

Symptoms of nasolacrimal duct blockage in dogs:

There is purulent secretion attached to the inner canthus of the eye, and tears flow out continuously. The underside of the corner of the eye is dyed with red hair. Due to the long-term impregnation of tears, the skin under the corner of the eye has a little hair loss. There was no pain in the eyes of the dogs, no vision loss, no shyness, cloudy fundus and other clinical symptoms.

Cause:

Congenital: Congenital stenosis, displacement, or conjunctival fold coverage Atresia of the lacrimal ducts, lacrimal canaliculi, or nasolacrimal ducts and abnormalities of the eyelids (entropion) can cause this condition.

Acquired: Often associated with conjunctivitis, lacrimal duct inflammation and trauma. Inflammation of the nasolacrimal duct can be secondary to upper respiratory tract infection and maxillary dental disease. Due to the stimulation of long-term chronic inflammation of the lacrimal duct, the lacrimal duct epithelial cells swell, tissue hyperplasia, and scarring, resulting in lacrimal duct stenosis or obstruction.

Differential diagnosis: congenital abnormalities of the tear ducts, usually occurring in puppies weeks or months after weaning, epiphora may occur in unilateral or bilateral eyes, with traces of tear stains, and prolonged canthus Purulent secretions can be seen everywhere, but there are no symptoms such as pain and shame; in the case of obstruction caused by lacrimal duct inflammation, in addition to lacrimation in the inner canthus of the eye, pain, swelling, inflammatory secretions, etc., are also manifested. In severe cases, purulence conjunctivitis, eyelid abscess, etc.

Treatment:

Firstly, general anesthesia was administered to the affected dog, and 0.5 mL/kg body weight was injected intramuscularly. With SuMianxin mL, the affected dog was placed on the side and the affected eye was facing upwards. Then, the puncta was found at the thick upper eyelid margin, 25 mm away from the eye canthus, and the nasolacrimal duct was inserted into the puncta along the nasal cavity to flush the needle. When inserted to a depth of about 1cm, connect the syringe and rinse it repeatedly with the 1% procaine penicillin solution prepared in advance. Note that the operation should be gentle and not rough, until you feel that the resistance continues to decrease when flushing, and there is a slow flow of liquid from the nostril on the side of the affected eye, gradually increasing, from a point to a line. At this time, the nasolacrimal duct is clear. Flushing succeeded. Then the dogs were exposed to Baoding, and 0.5 mL of Suxingling was intravenously injected.

The nasolacrimal duct of dogs is very thin, so the operation should be gentle and not rough when flushing, so as to prevent rupture of the nasolacrimal duct. From the perspective of the incidence, the incidence is more in autumn and winter. In autumn, there is a lot of rain, the air is humid, there are many mosquitoes and flies, and it is easy to be infected; in winter, the climate is dry, and there is more wind, sand and dust, which is also easy to cause the disease.
